Featuring two-dimensional drawings and paintings as well as three-dimensional sculptures from found items, this exhibition of mixed-media work by Loren Schwerd and Marco Zamora looks to collections of memory and nostalgia. Both artists bring unique perspectives to issues of home and memory, and the way the material world becomes integrated into identity.

UWM Union Art Gallery – Crossing Over opens Tonight!

October 22 – November 12, 2010
Opening Reception: Friday, October 22nd, 5-7pm
UWM Open House:  Friday, October 29th and Saturday, October 30th
Crossing Over showcases work by undergraduate students in UWM’s Peck School of the Arts who received scholarship and fellowship awards in 2010. The high-caliber artwork produced by these emerging artists covers a wide variety of mediums and topics. The show is open during the university’s annual Open House, hosted by the UWM Union.

Conspicuous Consumption opens today!

This is an art exhibit opening today (Sept 24th) through October 15th featuring videos by Patty Chang, Photographs from Mark Menjivar’s “You Are What You Eat” series, and John Riepenhoff’s performance piece “Physical Pizza Networking Theory” at the opening tonight (4pm) and every Thursday for the duration of the exhibit.

Tonight there is also a gallery talk by Patty Chang at 4pm.  If you are in the cream city be sure to stop by this exhibit!

Black Rock Collective 101 Show Opening Tonight! 5 – 8 pm

Come join us at our first opening of the semester for artwork by the Black Rock Collective and music by Kid Cut Up.

The Black Rock Collective is an international group of artists with varying backgrounds and styles.  The collective is made up of the original artists and designers for the popular website, an online design community.  BRC-101 features work of 20 members, exploring the history of the Black Rock Collective.

George Goundie Memorial Scholarship Exhibition and Silent Auction opens July 9th!

From July 9th through July 23, the UWM Union Art Gallery will host the Biennial Goundie Memorial Scholarship Exhibition and Silent Auction.  All art work in the exhibition will be available for purchase through silent auction-style bidding.  The opening reception will be held from 5-8pm on Friday, July 9th. The closing of the auction will be at 8:00pm on Friday, July 23rd.

This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Professor Emeritus George Goundie and is a silent auction to raise money for student scholarships in the Peck School of Arts Sculpture Department.  In George Goundie’s 26 years of distinguished service at UWM, he served as Chairman of the Art Department, Chairman of the Knapp Bequest Committee, a member of the Faculty Senate and the former UW System Faculty Assembly.  He also served on a wide variety of arts councils and exhibited extensively in major regional and nation exhibitions.

This exhibition will include a variety of artworks in various mediums with all pieces being available for purchase through a silent auction held concurrent with the show dates.  Artist contributors include some of PSOA’s finest faculty—past and present—and art students.  All proceeds will benefit the George Goundie Memorial Scholarship Fund.  These scholarships are awarded to UWM students pursuing sculpture in the Department of Visual Art.

Gallery Hours are Monday through Wednesday 12-5pm, Thursday 12-7pm and Friday through Saturday 12-5pm.  The gallery is located on the Campus Level of the Union in room W199.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Union Art Gallery (UAG) is an art space dedicated to the exhibition of diverse, contemporary art.  The UAG presents a broad range of visual art by exhibiting work in all mediums by local, regional, and national emerging and established artists.  In addition, the Union Art Gallery prides itself on being an accessible space for UWM student artists to exhibit and learn.  For more information, visit us online at

37th Annual Juried Art Show Opens tonight! 5-8pm

This year’s 37th Annual Juried Art Show at the UWM Union Art Gallery has some fantastic artwork from students as far as Whitewater!  We hope to see you at the opening tonight, but in case you can’t here are details on the show:

Some information on the jurors:

Della Wells is a nationally recognized artist whose work is shown in Europe and throughout the United States. She is the president and founder of the artists’ advocacy group ABEA (African American Artists Beginning to Educate Americans about African American Art).

Fold artist Jose Chavez’s work has been exhibited at the Mexican Fine Arts Museum in Chicago, Milwaukee Art Museum, and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. He is on the Board of Directors at Redline Milwaukee and serves on the Education and Public Programs Committee at the Milwaukee Art Museum.

Steve Vande Zande received an MS in the area of leadership with emphasis in the arts from Banks Street College of Education in conjunction with the Parsons New School for Design. he is the President of Redline Milwaukee and an education programmer for the Milwaukee Art Museum.

Foundations XI: Ecology/Ecologies Opening
